Jeff Bowders demonstrates Bass Drum Techniques through this online video lesson courtesy of Percussion Institute of Technology at the Musician’s Institute in Hollywood, California. Jeff covers the two basic technique on kick drum such as heels up and heels down. However, the drum lessons and exercises are about dynamics, basic kick patterns with snare and variations thereof.

Bass drum or kick drum drives the beat of modern pop and rock songs, it is important that the kick drum pattern be steady. In funk, reggae and other rhythmic types of music, the playful and syncopated approach to the bass drum is key to making a song alive and stand out.
